😍❌🤓📚☠️

❌Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe
Published in 2019, “Gender Queer” is near the top of the list of most challenged/banned books in the US over the last couple of years. Opponents are strongly opposed to the LGBTQIA+ content and because it was considered to have sexually explicit images.

The list of districts and groups that have challenged/banned this book in the past couple of years is too long to list!

❌All Boys Aren’t Blue by George M. Johnson
Published in 2020, “All Boys Aren’t Blue” was listed in 2021 by the American Library Association's Office of Intellectual Freedom as the third most banned and challenged book in the United States. In 2022 it was on the list. To date more than 29 school districts have banned this book.

Opponents are strongly opposed to the LGBTQIA+ content, profanity, and because it was considered to be sexually explicit.

❌This One Summer written by Mariko Tamaki and illustrated by Jillian Tamaki
Published in 2014, “This One Summer” was listed by the American Library Association’s Office of Intellectual Freedom as the the most banned and challenged book in the United States in 2016.

Complaints cite its inclusion of LGBTQ+ characters, drug use, and profanity, and it was considered sexually explicit with mature themes.

We find it interesting that the so called “freedom” “individualist” “don’t tread on me” crowd is so focused on treading on the freedom of other individuals. We believe in freedom for every individual to decide for themselves how to live and happy, fulfilling, and productive life. #focusonyourself #freedom

  • This week we will begin reading a book that has been challenged and censored numerous times in the decades since being published in 1965, “The Autobiography of Malcolm X”. More recently prisons are banning his books from their facilities. Stating that “Malcolm X is not allowed”. 📖

In his autobiography, Malcolm X wrote: “I have often reflected upon the new vistas that reading opened to me. I knew right there in prison that reading had changed forever the course of my life. As I see it today, the ability to read awoke inside me some long dormant craving to be mentally alive.”

The book has been described as being a “how-to-manual” for crime and decried the book for its “anti-white statements.” In the eyes of many white Americans the book promotes the dangerous ideas of black equality and power.

Our thinking is that much of the controversy around Malcolm X is a symptom of ignorance and fragility, expressed by people who are faced with uncomfortable truths, which are spoken by a strong individual, a black man who powerfully and intelligently describes the reality that existed/exists in our society.

❌The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum
Banned by the Chicago Public Library in 1928, “arguing that the story was ungodly for ‘depicting women in strong leadership roles.” Banned by the Detroit public library in 1957, stating they had “no value for children of today.”

❌ Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut
Banned by Oakland County, Michigan public schools in 1972 and Missouri’s Republic High School in 2011. Slaughterhouse-Five was also the center of attention in 1973 when a school board president in North Dakota burned 32 copies of the novel in the school’s furnace in protest. They didn’t damage us when we were young. It was evil deeds and lying that hurt us.”

❌ Go Tell It On The Mountain by James Baldwin
Challenged in Hudson Falls, NY in 1994 and Prince William County, VA in 1988 for various reasons including “language, sexual themes, violence, and references to rape and degrading treatment of women.”

This week we will begin reading a book that has been challenged and censored numerous times in the decades since being published in 1965, “The Autobiography of Malcolm X”.

Banned Books Week begins this weekend (Sunday) and is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. The freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular. Celebrate freedom. Read banned books.

This week we will be selecting a banned book to read and we encourage you to do the same. Read something outside of your comfort zone, research why it was banned/challenged, and expand your mind. Check out the Banned Books shelf at Big Story!

We’re open all weekend and Labor Day 10AM-3PM. 📚🇺🇸 Did you know… Oregon was the first state to pass a law recognizing Labor Day in the late 19th century.

Do Not Read These Books! ❌☠️❌ Yes, including Where’s Waldo. They have been banned, by some group somewhere by people who don’t trust you to think for yourself and develop your own thoughts and morals. 🙄

Actually, we don’t think there is any good reason to ban a book and are preparing to celebrate Banned Books Week which begins on 9/18/22. We are expanding our banned books shelf and adding the books shown in this photo. We encourage you to understand why the book was banned and then read it.

These new arrivals all came to us from our wonderfully curious minded customers this weekend. 🤓📚😍 They will be hitting the shelves this week!

We buy books daily. You can bring a stack of ten books or less any day between 10AM-3PM. We are particular about condition and look for books that we think you will enjoy. Check out our website for additional guidelines.

We’ve been hard at work this evening cleaning and repairing and will be open tomorrow at 10AM!

Thank you all for the kind words and support. Also, special thanks to Mollie at @northwest.key.commercial for her prompt communication and action. She scheduled Central Oregon Disaster Restoration who showed up within 45 minutes to remove the damaged window and frame and secure the store with plywood. One last THANK YOU to Hannah @eltaquerobend and the team at Colima Market for their attention and help with this situation.
